From Immigrant to Doctor: A Journey Shaped by Diversity and Dedication
I was born and raised in Xi’an, China, a city rich in history and culture. At the age of 10, my family and I moved to Montreal, Canada, where I quickly adapted to a new life and embraced French as my second language. Just three years later, we immigrated to the United States, settling in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was in Las Vegas where I fully immersed myself in the American way of life and completed high school.
Seeking new horizons, I traveled across the country to attend Columbia University in New York City. By the age of 20, I had lived in four culturally distinct urban centers, each experience shaping my perspective on life. These transitions taught me that there is no singular “right” way to live—there are always “better” ways to grow and thrive.
As a first-generation immigrant, first-generation college graduate, and first-generation doctor, I bring a unique understanding and compassion to my role. I strive to be a supportive partner in your journey towards self-improvement and discovery.
Beyond my professional life, I cherish my roles as a mother, wife, and cat owner. In my personal time, I enjoy dancing Tango, a passion that reflects my love for connection and rhythm in life. Together, let’s explore the pathways to finding the best version of yourself.
Our History
As a board-certified general adult psychiatrist, my journey in mental health care has taken me through various hospital systems and practice settings, including Los Angeles County Medical Center, Keck Hospital of USC, Kaiser Permanente, Exodus Recovery Urgent Care, and the Crisis Intervention and Inpatient Unit at Ventura County Medical Center. With a B.A. in Neuroscience from Columbia University and an MD from the University of Nevada Reno, I’ve refined my approach by adopting the best practices and discarding outdated methods, ensuring you receive the most current and effective care.
What began as Psychiatry with Dr. Lei, a small, intimate practice, has evolved into Ascend Psychiatry, where my business manager Michelle and I are committed to helping you achieve a healthier future. Together, we believe in creating a path to a better tomorrow, centered around your well-being
what sets us apart
Unfettered Access
Tired of waiting on your doctor? At Ascend, you have direct access to me—your dedicated provider—without the hassle of mid-levels or covering doctors who don’t know your history. I respond as soon as possible to ease your concerns and provide timely, personalized care.
Psychodynamic Approach
We’ll explore not just how medications affect your body, but also how past experiences shape maladaptive patterns. My goal is to help you gain insights that foster independence rather than reliance on medication.
Convenience and Flexibility
All visits are virtual, so you can connect from anywhere in California—no need to leave home. Traveling? As long as you have internet and privacy, your care continues. I also offer after-hours appointments to fit your schedule.

Your Questions Answered
In your first appointment, we will go over your current symptoms, past psychiatric history, medical history, substance use history, social history, and your goal for treatment. We will discuss your preliminary diagnoses and appropriate pharmacological interventions.
Absolutely. Over the years, I’ve had patients bring their partner, parent, adult children, sibling, or a trusted therapist to not only their initial consultation but to subsequent appointments as well. I understand that you may be nervous meeting me for the first time. Often our loved ones can offer invaluable insights from what they observe – of course I am interested in hearing their perspective so I can get to know you better.
At the regular level of service, I can reach out to your current therapist to inquire additional history they may want to share (this is not obligatory) and encourage future lines of communication. At the comprehensive level, I will reach out to your therapist or anyone on your care team on a regular basis including but not limited to after every appointment.
As a solo psychiatrist, my practice is intentionally small to ensure that I can provide focused care for each of my patients. Because of this, I don’t have the administrative staff required to manage insurance billing. By operating outside of the insurance system, I am able to dedicate more time and energy to your care, rather than paperwork. I am happy to provide detailed receipts (superbills) that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Unfortunately, not at this time. To maintain the quality and attention my patients deserve, I’ve set my fees to reflect the time and expertise required for treatment. While I don’t offer a sliding scale, I encourage patients facing financial challenges to explore community resources or other providers who may offer flexible payment options.
Payments are accepted through credit card, debit card, Zelle, and Venmo. Payment is due at the time of service.
Our policy requires 2 full days’ notice for changes in appointment status (cancellations, etc.). We do charge the full fee for missed appointments and/or late cancellations.
